I. Introduction:

Caregivers play a vital role in providing essential support and care to individuals in various settings, including homes, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Being prepared to respond to emergencies is a crucial aspect of caregiving. Through interactive learning and hands-on practice, you’ll gain the confidence to respond effectively in critical situations. From recognizing the signs of cardiac arrest and choking to providing basic first aid for common injuries and illnesses, this course empowers you to become a more prepared and proactive caregiver.

II. Course Objectives:

  • Gain confidence in responding to emergencies in a caregiving setting.
  • Perform CPR techniques appropriate for the care recipient’s age.
  • Demonstrate proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if applicable.
  • Provide basic first aid for common injuries and illnesses that may occur in the caregiving environment.
  • Develop effective communication skills for relaying information to emergency personnel.

III. Course Highlights:

Module 1: Introduction to CPR and First Aid for Caregivers

• The Chain of Survival and its importance in a caregiving role.

• Special considerations for emergencies involving the target age group .

• Scene assessment and ensuring safety for yourself and the care recipient.

• Activating emergency medical services and communicating effectively.

Module 2: CPR and AED Training (Specific to Target Age Group)

• Recognizing signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest in the target age group.

• Performing age-appropriate CPR techniques (hands-on practice with mannequins).

• Proper use of a bag-valve mask (if applicable).

• Simulations and scenarios for applying CPR skills in a caregiving context.

• Instruction on using an AED if relevant to the caregiving environment.

Module 3: First Aid for Common Caregiving Emergencies

• Bleeding control with direct pressure and dressings, considering specific needs of the age group.

• Wound care and bandaging techniques for various types of wounds.

• Management of different types of burns, including those common to the care recipient’s age group.

• Recognizing and caring for sprains, strains, and fractures, tailored to the care recipient’s limitations.

• First aid for allergic reactions, considering potential medications or allergies of the care recipient.

• Seizure recognition and basic first aid steps.

• Choking recognition and response techniques specific to the age group.

• Heat and cold emergencies and appropriate interventions for the care recipient.

Module 4: Skills Practice and Assessment

• Interactive scenarios to reinforce first aid application in caregiving situations.

• Written knowledge assessment to ensure comprehension of key concepts.
